Located in Whangārei Heads, hiking Mount Manaia is a must-do when visiting Whāngarei. The hike to the summit is challenging but rewarding, with panoramic views of the surrounding coastline, offshore islands and Whangārei Harbour.

The track takes approximately 1.5-2 hours return, winding through native bush and climbing steeply towards the summit. The trailhead and car park are approximately 30 minutes drive from Whangārei.

Remember: The track is exposed at the summit and may be quite windy. Stay on marked paths, take care near the cliffs.

Personal tip: Mount Manaia is also home to kiwi! We hiked up for sunrise and got lucky seeing a kiwi dark across the track. Facing east, it’s a beautiful hike for sunrise as you watch the golden glow rise from the Pacific Ocean.

Pronunciation: Manaia: maa-naa-ee-aa

Whangārei: faa-NGAA-ray
