This hidden gem is off the beaten path and requires a trip of its own. Tarawera Falls are located near the outlet of Lake Tarawera, near the rural forestry town of Kawerau. The spectacular falls are unique, as water gushes from several caves in the cliffside.

You must collect a pass to enter the Tarawera Forest from the iSite in Kawerau. Alternatively there are also guided tours that share more about the culture and history of the area. From the carpark, the track follows the beautiful blue water of the Tarawera River, nestled in native bush. To reach the base of the falls is approx 20 mins one way. You can continue along the track to see where the stream disappears into the cliff, or walk 2 hours to the Lake Tarawera outlet.

Remember: The falls are located on private land, so please respect the area by staying on designated paths and taking all rubbish with you.

Personal tip: These falls are absolutely spectacular after rainfall. The track continues above the falls and it’s a beautiful area to explore.

Pronunciation: Tarawera: taa-raa-weh-raa

Kawerau: kaa-weh-roe
