An underrated gem, Kai Iwi Lakes are pristine crystal-clear freshwater lakes surrounded by native forest and stunning white sand dunes. While this is a popular destination in the summer months, it’s a bit of a local’s secret and many New Zealanders have never heard of this tropical location! It’s a beautiful place for swimming, kayaking, jumping off the pontoon and relaxing for a few days at the lakeside campgrounds.

The lakeside campsite is a great spot to stay during your Northland road trip to break up your journey, or are also ideal for a weekend escape. The Pine Beach Campground is the prettiest, but most busy. The Promenade Point Campground is on the wester side of the lake, which is often a big quieter, while still providing lakeside access for swimming and recreation.

Remember: The campsite facilities are only for overnight visitors. Be respectful and stay within the designated day-visitor area if you are not staying overnight.

Personal tip: This is the perfect place to stay if you are travelling around Northland, have an overnight stay at the campground, enjoy sunset over the lakes and maybe even wake up early for a sunrise swim. As freshwater lakes, they are often warmer than the ocean for swimming, especially towards the end of summer!

Pronunciation: Kai Iwi: kai ee-wee
