Karangahake Gorge is a beautiful scenic drive between the towns of Paeroa and Waihi in the Coromandel region. It’s also filled with plenty of trails for cycling and walking, a destination of its own, or the perfect place to break up your journey.

The Rail Tunnel Loop is a popular trail, following the old mining railway line and passing through a 1km long historic railway tunnel. The trail passes alongside the remains of historic mining operations, showing a glimpse into the area’s gold rush past. The track is suitable for all skill levels and takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete.

The Windows Walk is a popular hiking trail that takes visitors through the heart of the gorge, offering breathtaking views of the steep valleys and Ohinemuri River below.

Note: Some tracks have had recent closures. Check the DOC website for up-to-date information.

Remember: Take a torch to explore the mining tunnels and railway tunnels, as they can be dark even on a sunny day!

Personal tip: This is a beautiful region that’s often overlooked, but it’s a great destination for nature lovers, history enthusiasts and it’s worth staying at a cute airbnb nearby or exploring the antique stores in Paeroa.

Pronunciation: Paeroa: Pie-roe-aa

Waihi: wai-hee
