Chances are you’ve seen Roy’s Peak across your Instagram page 100s of times. This iconic viewpoint provides incredible panoramic views of Lake Wānaka, the surrounding mountains and the small mountain town of Wānaka, nestled on the shore of the lake. The track passes through farmland and tussock covered hills via switchbacks and a 4WD track.

The hike to the summit is challenging and moderate levels of fitness are required for this 5-6 hour return hike, over 16 km and 1,310m of elevation gain. There are also seasonal restrictions from Oct to Nov. Check the DOC website for up-to-date information.

Remember: Be prepared for all weather. The track is quite exposed to the elements, sunny in summer or windy in winter. You may require ice axes and crampons during winter.

Be courteous to others on the trail and do not ‘hog’ that ‘insta-spot’ for too long!

Personal tip: Roy’s Peak is spectacular for sunrise. Try to beat the crowds (spoiler, you won’t - everyone else will have the same idea…) and walk up in the dark to watch the first light of the sun on the mountain tops.

Pronunciation: Wānaka: WAA-naa-kaa
