2-3h
This one is a bit of a secret, Mount Urchin boasts incredible views of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Approximately 1 hour south of Taupō, located off Desert Road, Mount Urchin is located in the Kaimanawa Forest Park.
The hike is moderately challenging, with a steep incline through native forest, alpine tussocks and rocky outcrops. It is approximately 3-4 hours return via the same track with 545 m elevation gain.
Remember: Always hike within your ability, be prepared for all weather.
Personal tip: The access road to Mount Urchin is gravel, narrow and it is recommended that you have a 4WD vehicle. You can also walk this section of the track if it’s not safe to drive in your vehicle.
Pronunciation: Ruapehu: roo-aa-peh-hoo
Tongariro: tor-ngaa-ree-roe
