The Church of the Good Shepherd in Tekapō is one of New Zealand’s most iconic and photographed landmarks. Located on the shores of Lake Tekapō, this small stone church was built in 1935. With the Southern Alps as a backdrop and the turquoise waters of Lake Tekapō it’s a picture-perfect spot and a must-visit in Tekapō.

The church is a short walk from the town centre, accessible by car or foot, though parking may be limited. Stroll around the church grounds, open to the public during the day. The inside of the church is closed except for Sunday services and pre-arranged private tours.

Remember: The church is a sacred site, be mindful when exploring the area. Check for any service times or special events as the church may be closed to visitors during those times.

Personal tip: Sunrise and sunset are the best times to photograph the Church of the Good Shepherd. Or at nighttime, you may miss the crowds and get to practise your astrophotography - don’t forget your tripod!

Pronunciation: Tekapō - teh-kaa-POR
