The Key Summit trail starts on the Routeburn Great Walk track and is a side-hike to the Great Walk. It is an awesome Fiordland day walk with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and alpine tarns. The hike begins at The Divide car park on the Milford Road and takes approximately 3-4 hours return. The track winds through native beech forest before ascending to the alpine zone, where hikers are treated to stunning vistas of the Darran Mountains and the Routeburn Valley.

Remember: You will also pass through some unique, fragile alpine ecosystems. Follow any signage, stay on the track and do not damage these precious fragile landscapes.

Personal tip: Fiordland is known for its rainy weather and unfortunately you’re unlikely to see any good views if it is a wet day… It’s a good idea to allow a few days in Fiordland for weather contingency, and worth waiting for clear skies!
