The Rakaia Gorge is a beautiful river canyon along the scenic SH77 inland route. It is often overlooked as visitors drive past, but it is well worth stopping for a walk along the Rakaia Gorge Walkway or for jet boating, fishing or picnicking. The river is a vibrant turquoise blue, surrounded by cliffs, forest and the iconic road bridge.
Park near the SH77 bridge and cross the highway to access the Rakaia Gorge Walkway.
Remember: Be courteous to other road users. Drive safely and check carefully when crossing the highway.
Personal tip: Always take the scenic route. This is such a great place to stop and stretch the legs on your journey from Christchurch to Tekapō. Take 30 mins to an hour and explore the walkway.
Pronunciation: Rakaia: raa-kaa-ee-aa
Tekapō - teh-kaa-POR
