Also called Mauao, or “the Mount” by locals, Mount Maunganui is a Bay of Plenty icon, at the end of a peninsula. It rises 232 metres out of the sea, with panoramic views of the surrounding coastline, harbour and city of Tauranga. Mount Maunganui is popular for its beautiful beach, surf breaks, new skatepark and vibrant cafe culture.

Mauao boasts several walking tracks - climb to the summit, which takes 45 minutes one-way, or walk the loop around the base of the volcanic mountain, taking approximately 1.5 hours - or do a combo of the two! You will often see locals running up and down the hill, it’s a favourite and once you see the views, you’ll understand why.

Remember: The track can be quite exposed, sunny in summer or windy in winter.

Personal tip: The view from the summer is amazing! I highly recommend this hike - it’s fun to come back and attempt a different track to get a different perspective of the local area.

Pronunciation: Mauao: moe-ow

Maunganui: moe-ngaa-noo-ee
