These incredible natural formations are a hidden gem, well off the beaten track. In Kahurangi National Park, you’ll find these massive limestone arches, caves, and sculpted rock formations, tucked away in lush native bush. Highlights include the Moria Gate Arch and Ōparara Arch. There are many walking tracks, well signposted with walking times and directions, full of birdlife among the ancient forest.

The Ōparara Arches and Caves are located a 20 minute drive from the town of Karamea, at the northernmost end of the West Coast and are accessed via a gravel road. Karamea alone feels remote, a quiet rural town with a small supermarket and just one petrol station.

Remember: These natural formations have been shaped over 35 million years. Be respectful, stay on the marked path, take any rubbish with you and leave this place so that people can continue to visit for years to come.

Personal tip: The Moria Gate Arch is my favourite, a stunning cave with the stream flowing through. We were lucky enough to have the place all to ourselves, and you likely will too. Even in peak season, not many people make it to this remote corner of New Zealand.

Pronunciation: Ōparara: OR-paa-raa-raa

Karamea: kaa-raa-meh-aa
