Matapouri is a favourite beach for a lot of New Zealanders and a visit there will make you understand why. It’s stunning white sandy beaches, beautiful views, perfect horseshoe shaped bay - what’s not to love?!
Over the hill from Matapouri beach, you’ll find the car park to Whale Bay. The bay is only accessible by foot, a short 10-15 min walk each way to a secluded, idyllic beach, framed by pohutukawa trees and white sand. The water clarity is incredible, making it the ideal spot for snorkelling, kayaking, swimming and paddle boarding - or just enjoy soaking in the New Zealand sun (with sunblock, of course…)
Remember: The nearby mermaid pools are closed, do not attempt to visit - there are plenty of other beautiful beaches to explore along the Tutukaka Coast instead.
Personal tip: It’s easy to see why this is such a popular spot in the summer! It’s one of the best beaches in New Zealand! Matapouri will be quite busy during the peak season, so keep this in mind.
Pronunciation: Matapouri: maa-taa-poe-ree
Tutukaka: too-too-kaa-kaa
