Old Iceland refers to the period from the settlement of Iceland in 874 until it came under Norwegian rule in the 13th century. During this time, the Icelandic chieftains established a form of governance called the Althing, making it one of the world's oldest parliaments. Christianity also arrived in Iceland during this period, and Icelandic historians began documenting the nation's history in sagas. Despite internal conflicts weakening Iceland, it remained independent until eventually becoming subjugated to Norway.
