If you’re up for a cracking day out, Rottnest Island (or Rotto) is an absolute must-do. Just a short ferry ride from Fremantle, this island is pure magic with white sandy beaches, turquoise water, and those cheeky little quokkas that’ll steal your heart (and maybe your snacks lol).

Getting There

Book the early ferry—trust me, you’ll want the whole day to explore. The B Shed in Fremantle is a great spot to park for the day. It’s affordable, secure, and makes catching the ferry a breeze. If you’re staying the night, camping’s an option too, but spots fill up quick so book ahead.

Getting Around

The island might look small, but it’s bigger than you’d think. My advice is to skip the pushie and hire an e-bike—it’s worth every cent. You’ll zip around with ease, making it more about soaking in the views and less about breaking a sweat.

Best Things to Do

  • Little Salmon Bay: This is hands down my favourite beach. It’s like stepping into a postcard or, honestly, Mallorca in Spain! Crystal-clear water, amazing snorkelling, and such a peaceful vibe—it’s paradise.

  • Quokka Selfies: You can’t leave Rotto without snapping a selfie with a quokka. They’re the happiest little animals you’ll ever see, but remember to keep your distance and don’t feed them.

  • The Bakery: Oh, the bakery is a must! Grab a pie or one of their delish sweet treats. But watch out for the magpies—they’re brutal. I copped a swoop last time and ended up with a cut lip. Classic Aussie wildlife moment, right?

  • Cafes on the Waterfront: After a big day exploring, settle in at one of the cafes on the waterfront for a coffee or a cold drink. The views are gorgeous, and it’s the perfect spot to chill.

Other Tips

  • Snorkeling and Swimming: Pack your gear because the snorkeling here is unreal. Little Salmon Bay and The Basin are my top picks.

  • Camping: If you want to stay the night, there’s a campground, but book ahead—it’s super popular.

  • No Pets: Sorry, your furry mates have to sit this one out—no pets are allowed on Rotto to protect the native wildlife.

Rottnest is such a vibe. Whether you’re spending a day cruising on your e-bike, lazing on stunning beaches, or spotting quokkas, it’s an adventure you’ll be talking about for ages. So pack your sunnies, slap on the sunscreen, and get ready for a day (or two) in paradise.
