Overview
The Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice is a 12-story office building located at 320 East 43rd Street in the East Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan. It serves as the headquarters for the renowned Ford Foundation.

Architecture and Design

  • Designed by architects Kevin Roche and John Dinkeloo in the late modernist style, completed in 1968.

  • Features a glass-and-steel cube structure held up by concrete piers clad in Dakota granite.

  • Includes a large public atrium with landscaping, plants, trees, and a reflecting pool, one of the first such spaces in a Manhattan office building.

Recent Renovation

  • Underwent a major $205 million renovation from 2015-2018, led by architecture firm Gensler.

  • Improvements included environmental sustainability, accessibility, fire safety, and event spaces.

  • Renamed the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice to reflect its renewed focus on social justice initiatives.

Visiting the Building

  • Main entrance is located at 320 East 43rd Street, with a secondary entrance on 42nd Street leading to the atrium.

  • The atrium garden is open to the public Monday-Saturday, featuring nearly 40 plant species, a reflecting pool, and accessible paths.

  • The Ford Foundation Gallery hosts free exhibitions and is open during public hours when shows are on view.

  • Situated near the United Nations headquarters and Tudor City residential development.

  • Accessible by public transit, including Grand Central Terminal and several subway lines.

  • Drop-off area available at the 43rd Street entrance for vehicles.
