No trip to Osaka would be complete without Osaka Castle that played a significant role in the country's unification during the sixteenth century. With its impressive main keep and intricate defensive fortifications, the castle stands as one of Japan's most famous landmarks. While it's not my favourite castle by a long shot, the castle grounds are especially beautiful in spring and autumn and include important cultural assets like gates, turrets, and wells. Don't miss the stunning views from the top of the main tower! If you're not keen on a too-modern reconstruction, skip a visit inside and spend more time in the park. If you are looking for an authentic castle experience I highly recommend Matsumoto Castle in Nagano that still has its authentic interior.
