You are now in front of a little shop on the charming street of Banys Nous. Where does this figurine doing its business come from? I'll tell you! Literally, 'el caganer' means 'the pooper,' and in Catalonia, it's a figurine of a person doing their business. Like 'caga Tió (who you will discover in the next stop)' the caganer is a typical Catalan Christmas tradition. The caganer symbolizes fertile ground and a good harvest. The story behind it is that in the past, shepherds and farmers used to relieve themselves on their land to make it fertile. Nowadays, this is no longer done, and it's more of a playful nod to the past. The Catalans have embraced their knack for commerce in this tradition; now you can buy caganers in various figures, from the Spanish prime minister to famous football players or cartoon characters, and there's even a Santa Claus!

However, most Catalans have one in their nativity scene. It is said to bring bad luck if you don't…
