There are so many waterfalls in New Zealand, so why not add one more to the list! Karamatura Falls is a popular spot, especially since it’s pretty close to Auckland and a relatively short walk to reach. From the Karamatura car park, the trail to the falls is a 3.5 km return walk. The signs estimate 30 minutes, and while I usually find these times a bit exaggerated, this one is quite accurate, it’ll take about an hour of walking to complete.
The trail starts off fairly flat, with some cool historical information about old train tracks that used to run through the area, which adds a nice touch. As you continue, the trail begins to incline toward the falls. Along the way, you’ll pass two paths on your right that lead down to the water’s edge. One of them has a large waterhole, perfect for a swim on a hot day. Be sure to check out the little side paths why not explore it all.
Once you reach Karamatura Falls, you’ll find the waterfall cascading down a rocky cliff into a refreshing pool below, making it a great spot to cool off. The lush, green bush surrounding the area provides a peaceful backdrop.
