There is a saying here, Don't give Papaya!

Essentially what it means is, don't give people the opportunity to do things they shouldn't be doing here.

Just like any major city around the world, pick pocketing and petty theft exists in Medellin as well. It is important that you keep all your belongings on your being when you are out and about. Don't walk around with your phone out aimlessly or your head down focused on your phone. If you need to look up directions, pull off to the side, look up what you need, and continue on! It doesn't mean you shouldn't take photos! Take your phone out, snap your photos, and then put your phone away before you start walking again.

I also would recommend that you never leave your phone on the table while you're eating. Just be mindful of flaunting your things too much on the streets.

Remember, no need to make yourself a target. Leave all your expensive things at home and go out and enjoy the day knowing you aren't making yourself a target!
