Kalypso Beach is a special place on Crete’s southern coast. Upon arrival, the area might feel a bit deserted at first glance. The hotel located here, though past its prime, remains open.
As you follow the road down, you’ll find yourself heading toward Kalypso. This is not a traditional sandy beach but a stunning rocky cove with a cement platform surrounded by cliffs. The bay has only one open stretch leading out to the sea, making it feel like a secluded natural haven. It’s an excellent spot for snorkeling and swimming, with crystal-clear waters and an impressive underwater world to explore. Dive centers hold their diving sessions there. Umbrellas and sunbeds can be rented at the hotel. The vertical wall provides shade and blocks the wind, making it ideal for snorkeling.
For adventurous travelers, Kalypso Beach is accessible via a scenic hike from Plakias. The trail takes you over and around the mountain, offering breathtaking views along the way. From Kalypso, you can continue your journey to Damnoni by climbing the steep steps on the left side of the bay. At the top, you’ll find a perfect vantage point to capture stunning photos of Kalypso Beach from above.
If hiking isn’t your preference, the beach is also easily reachable by car, with parking available near the hotel.
