Glyka Nera, meaning "Sweet Water," is one of Crete's most breathtaking beaches, known for its deep blue waters and smooth pebbles. In 2003, the London Times ranked it among the top 20 beaches in Europe. Located 4 km west of Chora Sfakion and 75 km south of Chania, the beach gets its name from the fresh water that naturally flows from beneath the pebbles.
The most common way to reach Glyka Nera is by boat. However, for those who love adventure, there are two hiking trails leading to the beach. One route starts from Chora Sfakion, taking approximately 30 minutes from the nearest parking area above Iligas Beach. The second trail, from Loutro, takes around an hour and follows a path along the cliff’s edge, offering thrilling yet safe views. The trail is well-maintained by local authorities as part of the European E4 hiking route.
A small tavern built on a rock serves food, cold drinks, and even provides sunbeds. The natural spring water is drinkable. Due to the fresh water springs, the sea remains cool even in the height of summer. Several tamarisk trees line the beach, offering much-needed shade. At the beach you have a nudist part and a part for clothed people.
If you have the chance, Glyka Nera is a must-visit destination! Great for snorkeling too.
How to Get There
By Boat: Take a taxi boat from Loutro or Chora Sfakion, which is the easiest and most popular way.
On Foot: A scenic hike along the coastal E4 trail from either Loutro or Chora Sfakion. The trail offers stunning views but requires proper footwear and caution. Bring enough water and sunscreen!
