1. Weather can be unpredictable

The weather in the Rockies can change quickly, even in the summer. It’s common to experience sunshine, rain, and snow all in the same day, especially at higher elevations. Always pack layers (see our packing guide), and be prepared for sudden shifts in temperature.

2. Cell coverage is limited

Many people are surprised to find that cell phone coverage is very limited in Rockies. Once you get out of the towns, the service is either spotty, but more likely non existent. It's a good idea to research things in advance, download offline maps and carry satellite communicatior such as Garmin inReach if you plan to venture on trails in remote areas.

3. Getting around without a car is difficult

While Banff has a town's bus system including routes to some main attractions outside of town, Jasper's system is more limited and the rest of the Rockies is not covered by public transportation at all.

That being said, we're not saying that getting around Rockies without a car is impossible. For instance, if you're coming for a ski trip and really just want to go between the towns and ski resorts, most resorts offer free shuttles. But if you plan to explore beyond the main attractions or hike in more remote areas, renting a car is a must. So it all depends on what you plan to do, but car will generally give you a lot more freedom in that.

4. Plan for limited services in remote areas

While the towns have plenty of amenities, don’t expect the same once you drive outside of them. Services can be very limited in more remote areas, so plan for that.

5. Book things in advance

If you plan to visit during the peak summer months, you need to book things in advance. Not only will that help prevent disappointment, but it can also save you money on accommodations and car rentals, as there's more availability and better deals if you book ahead of time.

6. Visit popular spots early or late in a day to avoid crowds

Some people get surprised by how busy things can get on popular spots, but important to realize that this is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world and others simply want to experience it just like you. If crowds aren't your jam, visit popular spots early or late in a day.
