Public transport in Australia is quite affordable and especially in Sydney with buses, trams, trains, metro, and even ferries, you are well connected no matter where you want to go as a tourist in the city! Here's all you need to know :

Getting Started: Your Opal Card

Unless you have an Australian debit/credit card, we highly recommend using a multi-currency card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees such as Wise or a travel card preloaded with AUD. Each traveler should have their own. Please note once you tap on with a card, you will likely only see a $1 as a pre-authorization charge but you get the full fare charge a few days later.

Alternatively, grab an Opal card. This reloadable smartcard is your ticket to Sydney's trains, buses, ferries, and light rail. You can pick one up at any of these numerous locations. You can top it up in increments of $10, and I recommend preloading at most $20 per day of your stay (or $50 for three days). This will cover the transport types mentioned below in Sydney.

Airport to Sydney CBD

You can travel to and from Sydney Airport's Domestic and International terminals by train. The fare for train trips to Sydney Airport includes a station access fee of approx $16 which makes them more costly than regular public transport trips in Sydney. If you are +2 people and staying in the city center(Darling Harbour, Wynyard, Town Hall, Central, etc) we recommend booking a rideshare to your hotel directly.

Main Types of Transport

1. Trains: The Backbone of Sydney Transport

The train network is extensive and efficient, connecting major attractions and suburbs. The trains are clean, air-conditioned, and run frequently from early morning until around midnight.

2. Buses: Reaching the Nooks and Crannies

While trains cover major routes, buses fill in the gaps. They're particularly useful for reaching the Northern Beaches and Eastern Suburbs. Download the TripView app to track real-time bus arrivals. Most buses run from around 5 AM to midnight, with limited night services on major routes.

3. Ferries: The Scenic Route

Don't miss Sydney's iconic ferries – they're not just transport, they're an experience. The Circular Quay hub connects you to popular destinations like Manly Beach, Taronga Zoo, and Darling Harbour. Pro tip: The Manly ferry offers the same spectacular harbor views as expensive cruise tours, at a fraction of the cost.

4. Light Rail

Sydney's modern tram network connects Central Station to the Inner West (L1 line) and Circular Quay to Randwick/Kingsford (L2/L3 lines). Trams run frequently every 4-8 minutes during peak hours, offering smooth, level boarding access. It's perfect for reaching key spots like Chinatown, ICC Sydney, and Moore Park without dealing with traffic.

5. Metro

Sydney Metro is the city's newest driverless train system, currently running from Tallawong to Chatswood on the North West Line. Trains operate every 4 minutes during peak hours with no timetable needed, featuring modern stations with platform screen doors. The Metro is expanding through the CBD and beyond, adding another convenient transport option for visitors.

Plan Your Journey

Use the Transport NSW trip planner website or app to map your routes. It combines all transport modes and gives real-time updates. Remember that services are less frequent on weekends and public holidays. As locals, we find it easiest to use Google Maps and highly recommend you do too!

Money-Saving Tips

Travel during off-peak hours (before 6:30 AM, between 10 AM and 3 PM, or after 7 PM) for cheaper fares. On Sundays, you can travel all day for just $8.90 with your Opal card!

Sydney's public transport system might take a day to get used to, but it's one of the most efficient ways to explore this beautiful city!
