This quiet spot feels like a hidden playground in the desert, perfect for slow wandering, photography, and soaking in the surreal shapes carved by centuries of wind and water.The Devils Garden Outstanding Natural Area is a miniature wonderland of Navajo Sandstone hoodoos, domes, narrow passages, and small arches, hidden from view just off Hole-in-the-Rock Road in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Getting There: Hole-in-the-Rock Road is a generally well-graded dirt road branching southeast from UT-12, 5.8 miles east of the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center. From there, it’s a 12.3-mile drive down the main road to the signed turnoff for Devils Garden. Turn right and follow the short 0.25-mile spur road to the picnic area and trailhead. No 4x4 is typically needed in dry conditions, but weather can affect road quality quickly, especially after rain.

On the Trail: The area features a mellow 0.7-mile loop with side trails and slickrock routes to explore. Miniature domes, rivulet-carved narrows, and unique formations like Mano Arch and mushroom-shaped hoodoos dot the landscape. Start on the upper trail from the picnic site to find the small arch over a gully. The trail fades into slickrock but can be followed up to a view over a 15-foot-wide slot canyon. Loop back via the bench above the wash for a scenic return.

Pets: Dogs are allowed here and make great companions for this short hike. Just be sure to keep them leashed and pick up after them—this is a fragile desert environment.

Photography: Any time of day works for exploring, but sunrise and sunset provide the best soft light for capturing the warm colors of the rock. It’s also a great place for astrophotography with its dark skies and fascinating rock silhouettes.

Camping: Camping at the Devils Garden trailhead is not permitted, but there are dispersed BLM camping spots all along Hole-in-the-Rock Road. These are primitive, quiet sites tucked into junipers and pinyon pines. There are no services—pack it in, pack it out. Follow Leave No Trace practices: stay on durable surfaces, take all trash with you, and be mindful of wildlife and fragile soils.

Seasons & Conditions: In summer, expect hot, dry trails—bring plenty of water and sun protection. Winter brings freezing temps and high winds, so layer up. Flash floods are a risk year-round, especially during monsoon season (July–September), so check the forecast before heading out.

This is one of the most accessible and rewarding quick stops in Grand Staircase, offering a surreal desert vibe without the crowds or long hikes.
