A permit is required to visit the canyon, cost $15 , available from the Navajo Parks & Recreation office Cameron Visitor Center located at the intersection of Highways 89 and 64 (SW corner). The visitor center is open five days a week from 8AM to 5:30 PM during the winter months. or online at navajonationparks.org. This covers access points along the rim, close to the highway, and a separate charge is due for all overnight stays. The area below the canyon rim is part of the Hopi Reservation, and exploration here is only possible with a Hopi guide.

Coal Mine Canyon is a hidden gem in the vast desert of northeast Arizona. Located on the border between the Hopi and Navajo Reservations, this canyon is not well-known but definitely worth a visit. The main attraction here is the incredibly colorful rock formations that line the upper end of the ravine. It's like a natural work of art! To access the canyon, you'll need a permit from the Navajo Parks & Recreation office. Once you're there, you can explore the rim and take in the breathtaking views of spires, cliffs, narrow ravines, and strange rock formations. Just be careful not to disturb the delicate soils and enjoy the remote and windswept beauty of Coal Mine Canyon. Once you reach Tuba City turn right (South) on SR264 for about 15 miles or so. The entrance to the canyon is at mile marker 337. You will see a windmill on you left. This is the landmark to look for. At the entrance is a hand painted sign that read, No overnight parking.” Take this dirt road a short distance past the windmill. You’ll then see some picnic tables. Park here and explore.

Although there is no obvious path into the canyon, faint trails lead east and west along the rim, and towards some of the ridges that project outwards; there are two main promontories, each gradually narrowing and ending at isolated pinnacles with vertical drop-offs all around. Footprints show wherever a visitor has strayed from the paths, as the soils are delicate and easily disturbed, though the amount of land that can be walked upon is relatively limited as the slopes fall away steeply in most directions.

In summer, the trails are hot and dry; in winter, elevations make them subject to severe cold and high winds. Due to the quick changes in the weather, be aware of the dangers of flash floods. While this danger is greatest during the summer monsoon season (July through September), flash floods can occur at any time of the year. There is no service here, I recommend a gps device (like a Garmin in-reach) and make sure to bring lots of water in hot summer months, there are no services close by.

When planning to travel on backroads, especially during or after rain, it's advisable to exercise caution, be prepared for changing conditions, and, if possible, choose a vehicle with suitable off-road capabilities. Always prioritize safety, and if road conditions seem questionable, consider delaying your trip or choosing alternative routes. Practice Leave No Trace when hiking, ensuring minimal impact on the environment. Pack out all waste, stick to established trails, and leave nature as you found it, preserving the wilderness for others to enjoy.

Sunset is the best time to photograph Coal Mine canyon as the sandstone starts to light up with color. I recommend a wide angle lens, and a telephoto to capture details of the beautiful features that go on in the distance.

There is a family who lives on the farm you drive by, please be respectful of their land and leave no trace. If you see others waste, take the time to pick it up. The sweet family nearby also likes to enjoy this area and unfortunately cleans up after others who leave garbage on a daily basis.
