It's really important to make sure you take suitable clothes for a safari for a number of reasons!

We personally don't think you need to spend a fortune on 'safari clothes'. They are so expensive and just don't offer anything that's worth spending that money. Some claim they are 'anti-mosquito', but in our personal opinion we have still been bitten multiple times even though we are wearing 'anti mosquito' clothing! We think basic t-shirts/ trousers/ fleeces etc. will be absolutely fine!

Here are the Do's and Don'ts for what to wear on safari!

DO:

  • Opt for neutral colours! Khaki, brown & beige are the perfect colours for a safari.

  • Take layers! It can get really cold in the mornings and evenings on safari, especially when you're driving through the parks in open trucks. As soon as the sun rises it will soon heat up, so make sure you have layers you can easily take on and off.

  • Take a woolly hat and fleece for those cold evenings and mornings. It can be insanely cold, especially on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater.

  • Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing! It can get so hot during the day and you spend all day in a truck, so you want to feel comfortable throughout the day.

  • Take closed-toe shoes. You will be hopping in and out of the truck and bear in mind there are snakes and spiders around, so it's better to be on the safe side!

  • Take a rain jacket! You don't want to get caught out in a downpour.

  • Take a sun hat! It can get so hot during the day and it's amazing how easily you can get sunburnt in those trucks (something we learnt from!)

  • Take a beanie if going on safari in the winter/ dry season! It gets cold!

DON'T:

  • Wear black and dark blue clothing. This can attract the tsetse flies and trust us, you don't want that! (Although we still seemed to get bitten no matter what colour clothes we wore!)

  • Wear camouflage patterned clothing. It is actually illegal in Tanzania for civilians to wear camouflage. Only military personnel are permitted to wear this pattern.

  • Wear white shoes! Unless you don't mind them get covered in dust! You will be getting in and out of the truck, so there is a chance the dust and dirt will ruin them.

  • Overpack! It's so easy to do this, but you really don't need a huge number of clothes for a safari.

  • Bring posh evening wear! Lodges and camps are super casual and after a day on safari you'll just want to grab something to eat and head to bed early!

  • Wear bright colours or patterns.

  • Spend a fortune on 'safari clothes'. You just don't need them!
