Laufskálavarða is an impressive display of cairns in Iceland, with stone piles stretching across the land like miniature mountains. These cairns have historically been left as good luck by first-time travelers trekking across Mýrdalssandur. They also served as navigational markers for locals and may go back even further to when early settlers used them to mark their trails or other important sites. While these cairns are traditionally made of stone, today people are asked not to add any more cairns to the Icelandic landscape since it can be detrimental to the environment and existing cultural heritage. Visitors will be amazed at the spectacle of these unusual rock formations which serves as a reminder that beauty can be found far beyond nature’s works.
