Ilhéu de Vila Franca a tiny islet off the coast of São Miguel, Azores, looks like something straight out of a postcard, and it’s one of the most unique places you can visit on the island.
Info:
First off, it’s a sunken volcano. Over time, the crater filled with seawater, creating a natural swimming pool with some of the clearest, calmest water you’ll find in the Azores. It's also part of a protected nature reserve, which means it’s untouched and home to a variety of marine life.
Whether you’re into snorkeling, swimming, or just lounging in the sun, this place is a dream. The sheltered waters inside the crater make it perfect for a relaxing dip, while the rugged cliffs around it add to the wild, untouched vibe.
How to Get to Ilhéu de Vila Franca
The islet is just a kilometre off the coast of Vila Franca do Campo, and getting there is half the fun.
🚤 Boat Trips: There’s a small ferry that runs daily from June to October. It leaves from Tagarete Pier in Vila Franca do Campo and takes about 10 minutes. Since Ilhéu is a protected site, only 400 visitors per day are allowed, so it’s best to book in advance—especially in summer.
What to Do on the Islet
✔️ Swim in the Crater: The water inside the lagoon is calm, warm, and ridiculously clear. Perfect for floating around and taking in the views.
✔️ Snorkeling: The marine life here is incredible. You’ll spot colorful fish, starfish, and maybe even an octopus hiding in the rocks.
✔️ Cliff Jumping: Feeling adventurous? There are a few safe spots where you can leap into the water for an adrenaline rush.
✔️ Relax on the Rocks: There’s no sandy beach, but the rocky edges make a great place to sunbathe and enjoy the peace and quiet.
✔️ Explore the Outer Cliffs: If the tide is low and conditions are safe, you can swim out to explore the volcanic rock formations surrounding the crater.
What to Bring
Since this is a natural reserve, there aren’t any shops or facilities on the islet. You’ll need to bring everything you need for the day:
✔️ Swimsuit & Towel – You’ll be in and out of the water all day.
✔️ Water & Snacks – No food is sold on the islet, so pack a picnic.
✔️ Reef-Safe Sunscreen – The sun can be strong, and there’s not much shade.
✔️ Water Shoes – The rocks can be slippery and sharp in some areas.
✔️ Snorkeling Gear – The underwater views are worth it.
