Sumo wrestling is one of Japan’s most iconic traditional sports, and attending a live tournament is an unforgettable experience!
📅 Annual Sumo Tournaments (Honbasho)
There are six major sumo tournaments held each year, each lasting 15 days:
🏯 Tokyo → January, May, September
🏯 Osaka → March
🏯 Nagoya → July
🏯 Fukuoka → November
During these tournaments, wrestlers compete daily in matches that build up to an exciting final showdown.
🎟️ How to Get Sumo Tickets
✅ Official Sellers → Buy tickets in advance via the official sumo website or at buysumotickets.com
✅ Konbini (Convenience Stores) → Tickets can be purchased at 7-Eleven or Lawson (some Japanese language skills required).
✅ At the Stadium → Limited same-day tickets may be available but often sell out quickly.
💡 Tip: Book early, as sumo tickets sell out fast, especially for the best seats!
🤼♂️ Other Sumo Events & Training Sessions
If you're visiting Japan between tournaments, you can still experience sumo by attending morning practice sessions at sumo stables (heya) in Tokyo. Some sumo training stables allow visitors, but advance reservations are usually required.
