The private rooms with open-air baths all face the valley, creating what they describe as almost a floating sensation above the mountains. They particularly praise how the design manages to feel both ancient and modern at the same time.

What sets it apart, they say, is the attention to detail in everything - from the seasonal kaiseki meals to the way each bath is positioned to maximize views while maintaining privacy. The Ginyu Spa apparently takes the traditional onsen experience to another level entirely.

While it's definitely in the splurge category, our family insists it offers something special even among luxury ryokans.
