Iceland Ring Road Trip Packing List

Packing for a Ring Road trip in Iceland requires careful planning, as the weather can be unpredictable and conditions can vary from sunny days to rain, wind, and even snow, regardless of the season. Here’s a comprehensive packing list to ensure you’re well-prepared for your adventure.

Clothing:

  • Waterproof Jacket & Pants: Weather in Iceland can change quickly, so bring a high-quality waterproof and windproof jacket and pants to stay dry in case of rain or snow.

  • Warm Layers: Layering is key in Iceland. Pack moisture-wicking base layers (tops and bottoms), a fleece or insulated mid-layer, and a warm outer jacket.

  • Sturdy Hiking Boots or Trail Shoes: Waterproof and comfortable hiking boots are crucial for exploring Iceland’s rugged terrain.

  • Gloves, Hat, and Scarf: Even in summer, Iceland’s temperatures can be chilly, especially in the highlands or by glaciers.

  • Socks: Wool socks are great for keeping your feet warm and dry. Pack plenty, especially for hiking or wet weather.

  • Casual Clothes: Comfortable clothing for downtime in Reykjavik or when relaxing in the camper van.

  • Swimsuit: Don’t miss out on Iceland’s famous hot springs and pools, like the Blue Lagoon or natural geothermal baths.

  • Flip-Flops: For showering at campsites or relaxing in hot springs.

Camping and Van Life Gear:

  • Sleeping Bag: If your van doesn’t come with bedding, bring a sleeping bag suitable for cold weather.

  • Camping Stove or Cooking Gear: If you're planning to cook in your van, ensure you have a portable stove, pots, and utensils. Many rental vans come with a kitchen setup.

  • Camping Chairs and Table: For comfortable outdoor meals or relaxing at your campsite, again these can often be rented as an add on with your camper van.

  • Food Storage Containers: Keep your food fresh and organized while traveling. It doesn't hurt to bring a few chip clips and storage bags (we love Stasher bags for travel).

  • Headlamp or Flashlight: Essential for evening activities or for finding your way around campsites in the dark.

Electronics and Navigation:

  • Smartphone & Charger: Essential for navigation, photos, and staying connected.

  • Portable Power Bank: A must-have for keeping your devices charged while on the road, most camper vans will have USB posts to charge devices while driving.

  • Camera and Extra Memory Cards: Iceland’s landscapes are incredibly photogenic, so make sure to bring a camera (and extra memory cards or batteries).

  • Power Adapter: Iceland uses 230V, 50Hz, with European-style two-pin plugs. Bring an adapter if needed.

  • GPS or Offline Maps: Download offline maps on your phone (e.g., Google Maps or Maps.me) for areas with limited signal.

  • Wi-Fi Hotspot or eSIM: If your camper van doesn’t come with Wi-Fi, consider getting a mobile hotspot or an eSIM for reliable internet service during your journey.

Toiletries & Hygiene:

  • Biodegradable Soap & Shampoo: Iceland values environmental conservation, so use eco-friendly products that are safe for nature, while many campsites have showers, most do not provide soap or shampoo.

  • Towel: For hot springs and showers at campsites. We love microfiber towers because they pack up small and dry quickly.

  • Toothbrush & Toothpaste: Keep your dental hygiene in check while on the road.

  • Sunscreen and Lip Balm: Even on cloudy days, UV rays in Iceland can be strong, particularly near glaciers or in snowy areas.

Travel Documents and Money:

  • Passport/ID: Ensure you have your passport or valid ID for car rentals, hotels, and other services.

  • Driver’s License: You’ll need a valid driver’s license to rent a vehicle in Iceland. If your license is not in English or uses a non-Roman alphabet, you may need an International Driver's Permit.

  • Credit Card and Cash: Most places in Iceland accept credit cards, but it’s always good to carry a little cash, especially for small purchases like parking or at remote spots.

  • Rental Agreement and Insurance: Keep a copy of your camper van rental agreement and insurance details in case of any emergencies.

  • Travel Insurance: Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers accidents, medical issues, and vehicle damage.

Food and Snacks:

  • Reusable Water Bottle: Iceland’s tap water is some of the cleanest and purest in the world, so bring a water bottle to refill as you go.

  • Snacks: Stock up on easy-to-eat snacks like trail mix, protein bars, or dried fruit to keep you energized during hikes or long driving stretches.
