Isola San Giulio is a small island located at the heart of Lake Orta, in the region of Piedmont in Northern Italy. This charming island is a must-visit if you plan a trip to this beautiful Lake.
It can be easily reached from the town of Orta San Giulio. Buy the return ticket, which costs €5 and take the boat from Piazza Motta. The ride is very short, about 5 minutes or less.
The island is home to a basilica and nuns still inhabit the island. The Basilica of San Giulio was built in the 12th century and stands on the remains of earlier churches. The island is made of 1 circular road, which will bring you back to the ferry port. This walk is called Route of Silence and Meditation, and it invites you to focus and reflect.
I must say, there were some people speaking loudly, so it wasn’t completely silent. But I got the general idea of the walk, as the place felt very peaceful.
There are a few small alleyways that lead to the lake, offering views of the town of Orta San Giulio.
Here, you can also find a small restaurant, which offers local cuisine.
A trip to Orta San Giulio and Lake Orta wouldn't be complete without a visit to this small island. It doesn't take much time to visit about 30 minutes to 1 hour max.
