Portofino is one of the most charming towns on the Italian Riviera. It's known for its colourful buildings lining the small harbour. With its picturesque setting and luxurious vibe, Portofino has become a popular destination among wealthy people, and it attracts visitors from around the world.
Portofino is certainly a must-visit if you are coming during spring/summer to Italy. It has a few small beaches, many luxury shops and expensive restaurants.
If you're planning a day trip to Portofino here are some recommendations:
From Milan take the train to Santa Margherita Ligure, it takes about 2:30/3 hours. From Santa Margherita you can either take the bus, the ferry or walk your way to Portofino.
I would suggest walking to Portofino, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery, swim in the Paraggi Bay and reach Portofino 'slowly', which in my opinion builds even more excitement to visit the town.
Once in Portofino, you can swim in Cannone Bay, enjoy the beautiful view from Brown Castle over the town and reach the Lighthouse. Or you can just relax in the main piazza while enjoying a delicious gelato from Gelateria Gepi.
To go back to Santa Margherita Ligure, I think taking the ferry is the best way. It's fast and you get to see Portofino and the Coast from another perspective.
Portofino is doable for a day trip, and it's so worth visiting. I can't even describe how gorgeous the coast is over there.
