Isola Madre is the largest island of the Isole Borromee and it's located on Lake Maggiore, in the region of Piedmont in Northern Italy.
The island is known for its stunning botanical gardens and historic palace. In the past, it used to be an agricultural estate, but it evolved in a romantic landscape with exotic plants, rare trees, and colourful birds. The palace became the residence of the Borromeo family and now is a museum, showing a glimpse of the past.
While the palace is very interesting to visit, the reason you should visit this island is because of its botanical garden. I loved walking in this garden and enjoy all the natural beauty of the place. From the garden you can also enjoy some of the best views of Lake Maggiore.
Depending on when you visit, your garden experience will be different. I visited in late March, some trees like magnolias and camelias were in bloom, but it was still a bit bare.
Tickets: To visit the palace and botanical garden you'll need to purchase a ticket, either online, which I recommend, or on the spot. The price for the Isola Madre alone is €20, but I recommend purchasing the combined ticket 'Isola Madre + Isola Bella' which costs €36. It will give you access to both palaces, but you'll have to see them on the same day (it can be easily done).
To reach the island, you can use either the official ferries (check out Navigazione Laghi and then select Lago Maggiore), or the option I'd recommend is the taxi boat, that will bring you to all the 3 islands and then back to Stresa for about €15. Check the dedicated pin in Stresa for more info regarding transportation.
