Coffees in Greece

Frappe

Frappe is Nescafe coffee (instant coffee) whipped. It's served cold with ice cubes and if you want you can ask them to add sugar and or milk. If you've never had this before, you should give this a try.

Freddo

Freddo espresso and Freddo cappucino are the cold varieties of espresso and cappucino. Delicious to add some whipped cream!

Greek coffee

Greek coffee is known for the dirty drape on the bottom of the mug. It is wise not to stir too much and to stop drinking in time. It has happened to me (Vincent) several times that I was too eager to drink that I got that drip in my mouth.

Greek alcoholic beverages

The Greeks like a glass of alcohol. Karpathos also has it's local drinks such as Karpathian wine and homemade raki. Let us introduce you to the different drinks that you should try.

Ouzo

The best known of all is of course Ouzo, which you know as a shot from the local Greek. It has an anise flavour and is around 40% alcohol. Here in Greece, it is often drunk with ice cubes and a little bit of water.

Raki

Raki in Greece should certainly not be confused with the Turkish raki. The Turkish raki tastes the same as ouzo (the Greek one). Raki is made from the last remnants of wine grapes. It is mainly very strong. The tip is to drink the raki cold.

Rakomelo

This is a delicious homemade drink made from raki, honey, and hard herbs. Raki is very strong, but the honey makes the taste better!

Karpathian wine

This is the wine distilled on the island itself. It is a sweet red wine and you drink it very easily. Very tempting, but it is quite strong unnoticed. It comes closest to port as far as we are concerned.

Masticha

A slightly more unknown drink is Masticha which tastes a bit like liquorice. Tip to try it once, it's a little sweeter than other drinks.

Metaxa

This is the Greek cognac of the Metaxa family. Each star represents the number of years matured in the barrel. The most common is 5 stars, but there are older ones too.

Retsina

Who does not know Retsina?! This is a white Greek wine originally from Athens. Not everyone is a fan of this wine, but it certainly belongs to the Greek alcoholic drinks.

Greek wines

Greece is not necessarily known in Europe for its wineries in Greece. Still, there are quite a few wineries in Greece. We regularly buy the rosé 2 Roses. This one comes from the Peloponnese and is delicious!
