How to legally wild camp in the Swiss Alps.
If you want to avoid a heavy fine there are a few things you need to know about camping in the swiss alps.
In general, wild camping is allowed above the tree line (the altitude at which the trees stop growing - approximately 2,000 meters) provided you are not in a protect areas.
Respect Nature and Private Property
Avoid protected areas.
If you see a farmer ask politely if you can camp on their land, it may cost a small fee.
Leave No Trace
Pack out everything you bring in.
Minimize environmental impact by sticking to durable surfaces.
Camp Discreetly
Use small tents and set up late, leaving early in the morning.
Stay out of sight from trails and private properties.
Be Prepared for Alpine Conditions
Temperatures can drop dramatically during the night - prepare accordingly.
Don't go camping during a thunderstorm - check the weather.
Fire Safety
Each region of Switzerland has different rules but generally don't make a fire.
Use a portable stove for cooking.
