Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  • Monitor Official Updates: Stay informed about the current situation through local authorities, news outlets, or official websites. This will help you understand the status of the wildfire and any safety recommendations or evacuation notices.

  • Follow Authorities' Instructions: Adhere to any directives given by local authorities. This may include evacuation orders, road closures, or restrictions on certain areas. Their guidance is crucial for your safety.

  • Stay Away from Affected Areas: Avoid visiting or traveling through areas that have been recently affected by wildfires. These areas can be dangerous due to unstable terrain, falling debris, or ongoing firefighting operations.

  • Watch for Aftermath Hazards: After a wildfire, areas can remain hazardous due to debris, weakened structures, or potential landslides. Be cautious when exploring affected areas.

  • Respect Local Regulations: Follow any temporary rules or regulations put in place due to wildfire recovery efforts. This may include restrictions on camping, hiking trails, or access to certain areas.

  • Support Local Communities: Consider supporting local businesses and communities that may have been impacted by the wildfire. Your tourism can provide economic support during recovery. Please consider exploring Madeira with a local guide.

hiking safety IN CASE OF WILDFIRES

In the recent years Madeira has unfortunately been struggerling with wildfires. Hiking in the mountains and levadas during and after wildfires is unsafe due to several reasons, here are some of the main ones:

  • Limited Rescue Resources: During wildfires, Madeira has only one helicopter, and all firefighters are occupied with firefighting efforts. If you encounter an emergency during your hike, there may be no immediate rescue available.

  • Unstable Terrain: Wildfires weaken the soil and rocks, increasing the risk of landslides, rockfalls, and collapsing trails. Poor Air Quality: Smoke and ash from the fires can linger, leading to respiratory issues and reduced visibility.

  • Hidden Hotspots: Even after the fire is extinguished, smoldering hotspots can persist, posing a burn risk.

  • Damaged Infrastructure: Trails, bridges, and signage may be damaged or destroyed, making navigation dangerous.

  • Falling Debris: Burned trees and vegetation can easily collapse, creating hazards along the trails.

Please stay safe and refer from hiking during the fires, and after please make sure the trail you chose is cleared and/or go with a licensed mountain guide. By staying informed, prepared, and respecting local guidelines, you can help ensure your safety and contribute positively to the recovery efforts in Madeira after a wildfire
