This used to be my go-to "one walk per day" escape back when everything was closed, and we were only allowed outside for exercise. Back then, I wouldn’t encounter a single soul. Nowadays, that’s quite different! I recommend avoiding this walk on weekends. It’s best to start early in the morning or later in the afternoon to dodge the crowds.
This levada forms a circular route, thanks to a staircase that connects both trails. You can start the walk in two ways. Personally, I prefer starting at the top with Levada Nova, as it feels less challenging for my fear of heights. Keep in mind that this path can be narrow and often lacks safety railings, making it quite daunting for those who are afraid of heights. Click here to start up at Levada Nova.
On this path, you’ll eventually reach a tunnel (bring a flashlight!) that leads to a waterfall, where you can walk behind the cascading water. Take some photos, then follow the levada until you see a staircase on the left that leads down to Levada do Moinho.
Levada do Moinho is very different in appearance - wider and more rustic. This trail almost always has safety railings. You’ll walk in a more shaded environment, passing small waterfalls and even a picnic area along the way.
Both levadas begin near local homes and farmland, which gradually transitions into wild nature. Click here to start at the lower Levada do Moinho behind the church in Lombada.
Important Note:
This is not an official PR route, meaning the levada’s main function is irrigation, not hiking. There is a risk of rockfalls and landslides along the way. If you see a "restricted access" or "danger" sign, please turn back - even if you see others ignoring it. Unfortunately, these warnings are often disregarded for the sake of a photo. Stay safe and enjoy the walk responsibly!
