Levada dos Piornais is one of the oldest working levadas in Madeira. It’s easily accessible, located near the Barreiros football stadium in Funchal. It originally ran along two branches, which are now converted into roads called Rua da Levada dos Barreiros and Levada dos Ilhéus. Currently, it leads to tanks and pipes on the other side of Ladeira da Casa Branca.
You can walk this route from Funchal and return, or find transport at various points. It’s also possible to walk down from Madeira Shopping, but be prepared for a challenging section.
Take note of the pipes and missing covers along the levada, and be cautious around steep descents. I recommend starting the walk <HERE> for the convenience of most visitors.
This trail offers beautiful views over Funchal and Câmara de Lobos. The levada becomes more difficult after leaving Funchal as the path descends into the valley, with steep drop-offs and no barriers.
Personally, I prefer to descend from this point <HERE> towards the village of Câmara de Lobos, and then return to Funchal along the Praia Formosa beach. Of course, you can also choose to follow the same path back.
