Unlike other places, highways in the Yukon are very scenic with no traffic, amazing views and provides you access into nature. The South Klondike Highway takes you from Whitehorse all the way to Skagway, Alaska, you can drive the whole thing or just a section of it. You have guaranteed mountain views with a strong chance of spotting wildlife. It takes you from the boreal forest in Southern Lakes Yukon up into an alpine mountain pass known as the Whitepass in the Canadian/US border and down into the Coastal Rain Forest of Alaska (if you chose to go to Alaska make sure you have your passport).
📍 Details: From Whitehorse to Skagway, Alaska, it takes 2hrs and 17min but you're going to want to get out lots to explore. You can do it in a day or stretch it out to spend multiple days or even a weeks if you wanted to as it provides you with access to tons of hiking trails and lakes to explore. Here's some ideas of what you can do:
access lakes
take in towering mountain views right from the road
pullouts for sightseeing
hikes right from the road
opportunity to see wildlife
campgrounds
check out the small town of Carcross
mountain biking on Montana
waterfalls
Note: there's no cell service in most areas
📍 In the Winter: Road closures can occur South of Carcoss due to snow conditions and avalanches but for the most part it will stay opened. I would avoid going to the Whitepass area in bad weather because low visibility can make the driving dangerous. The highway isn't lit in the winter so keep this in mind when planning driving times.
