Offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges, it has become a popular destination for both sunrise and sunset enthusiasts. Pico Ruivo, standing at 1,862 meters above sea level, is the highest point on Madeira Island. While reaching Pico Ruivo requires some effort, it is less crowded than the more accessible Pico do Arieiro. As the tallest point on Madeira, Pico Ruivo provides the best vantage point for sweeping views of the entire island. Although the peak is relatively flat and large, there are limiting opportunities for dramatic compositions. It still remains a worthwhile visit if you have the time. You cannot drive directly to this viewpoint, but there are several ways
to reach the summit:
A - Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo: This is the most popular route, being the shortest and least strenuous. It is a 3 km hike that takes about 30-40 minutes. The trail is relatively flat for most of the way, with a short but steep incline from the Pico Ruivo shelter to the summit. Every trail to Pico Ruivo includes this final stretch.
B - Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo: This route is more technical and demanding, featuring an 800-meter incline on the round-trip journey and totaling 11 km in distance. It is suited for those seeking a more challenging hike.
C - Encumeada to Pico Ruivo: This trail spans 10 km one way from Encumeada to Pico Ruivo, offering a very scenic and rewarding hike.
As you hike up to Pico Ruivo from Achada do Teixeira, you will encounter several opportunities for captivating compositions. In the photograph above, you can see Pico do Arieiro and the PR1 trail, with the radar station visible in the distance. To the right, you can see the imposing Pico das Torres, a challenging climb that requires proper safety equipment.
