What you’ll do

So you've decided to visit the 8th wonder of the world, Milford Sound? Get ready for the road trip of a lifetime! This is one of the most (if not THE most) spectacular parts of New Zealand and it's best enjoyed on a self driven road trip.
This 2 night, 3 day road self driven itinerary is perfect for a long weekend visit to Milford Sound, or as an add on to existing New Zealand road trip plans you may have.

Important safety information about visiting Milford Sound.

Although the sounds are one of New Zealand's most frequented tourist destinations (for good reason) it is a very remote part of the country, with no cell reception, shops and gas stations once you pass the town of Te Anau.

It's important you stock up before driving and if you choose to visit in Winter (May - September) you may need to hire and fit snow chains to your car depending on how icy and snowy the road gets. Please consult with your car hire company to receive the best advice if you are adventuring here in the winter season.

Intro
It's day one of your Milford Sound road trip and time to set out from Queenstown!

The official drive time to Milford Sound is an easy 3 hours and 45 minutes, but I promise the drive itself and the things to see and do on the way are so spectacular that you are going to want to take all day.

I recommend leaving Queenstown bright and early and having brunch or lunch in Te Anau.

Important Information
There are no gas stations and grocery shops once you leave Te Anau and it can be quite pricey there.
I recommend stocking up on everything you need before leaving Queenstown. There are limited food options in Milford Sound, so take yourself some breakfast, snack and even dinner options if you haven't managed to get a booking at the Lodge restaurant.

And don't forget to download your navigation maps, cruise tickets and Spotify play lists for when you're out of reception.

Let the road trip begin!

Late Afternoon/Evening

Well, what did you think of the drive? Pretty spectacular right!

If you've managed to get an accommodation (and restaurant) booking at the Milford Sound Lodge then it should be time to check in, charge up all your devices (and perhaps yourselves with a power nap) before adventuring out for late afternoon or sunset. Most of the tour buses leave in the late afternoon, so you'll be able to explore the foreshore of the sounds with very few people.

If you're feeling exhausted from your road trip you can always do these tomorrow instead!

Don't forget your mosquito repellent.

PS. If you've managed to arrive on a very rare sunny day, then have a google of sunset times.. The sun sets very late in the South Island during summer, but the mountains surrounding the sounds means it can disappear earlier. When in doubt, ask a local like a member of the hotel staff.

Wave goodbye to Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu, it's time to continue onwards to Te Anau, the last settlement before Milford Sound.

This part of the drive (a good 2 hours) isn't that exciting, just lots of farm land with friendly cattle and goats. So put on some music and chill out until you reach Te Anau.

Te Anau is the last settlement before Milford Sound and the perfect place to stretch your legs.

Make sure you stock up on anything you've forgotten before continuing! There's no more shops or gas stations from this point onwards.

Important Note.

All of the following points of interest are stunning road trip stop options on route to Milford Sound. You don't have to do them all on the way there, in fact I would recommend saving a few (or even half) for your return journey, so that you arrive in Milford Sound with time to explore it a little by foot before tucking in for the night. Optionally do the Lake Marian Hike if you've got the time and fitness level! (3 hours return, steep terrain.)
