*Alstrom point can be very difficult to access if any type of weather condition is in effect. Always check the local weather conditions before setting out. The danger and difficulty of attempting this drive after a recent rain cannot be overstated. Under ideal conditions, a regular 2wd vehicle will get you to the first overlook and a high clearance vehicle will get you to the best overlooks. However, if it has recently rained, then even an offroad 4×4 may not be sufficient to get to you past the clay and over the washes.

The drive to Alstrom Point is a great day trip, accessible by most vehicles. You should plan on spending about 4-5 hours, unless you plan to spend the night. There are plenty of free dispersed camping sites at Alstrom Point, and very few are usually taken. There are no facilities here at all: no bathrooms, no water, no benches, nothing except maybe a fire ring, too. You’ll just have to be prepared with anything you would need, and pack out all waste.

There are no Services in the area so you will need to bring every you need with you (Download maps beforehand, or bring a GPS device like a Garmin In-reach). You should bring plenty of water, and enough food to stay the night. The combination of isolation, poor reception, and dangers associated with driving offroad can quickly turn a day trip into an involuntary overnight trip.

Alstrom Point is one of the most beautiful places in the American Southwest. Located within the tranquil Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Alstrom Point offers spectacular views of Lake Powell and the tip of Padre Bay. From this iconic viewpoint, one can see straight across the lake and admire the breathtaking hoodoo rock formations. To get to the viewpoint, visitors must traverse a rough, unimproved road. However, the effort is well worth it; particularly at sunset when the entire landscape is ablaze in warm, golden colors. For those who are up for an adventure, Alstrom Point offers a truly stunning experience that will take your breath away.

My recommendations for photography are to shoot sunrise or sunset. I've had amazing conditions during both, and any lenses are great here- wide to capture the vastness of the landscape and telephoto to get a closer look at things in the distance. Once you get here, I recommend walking around and getting familiar with compositions you like, as there are so many different rocks to shoot photos from!

Practice Leave No Trace when camping, ensuring minimal impact on the environment. Pack out all waste, stick to established trails, and leave nature as you found it, preserving the wilderness for others to enjoy.This is the desert, and mostly rock, so burying waste will be almost impossible, and the waste will not decompose.
