Use these travel tips to travel on a budget in Lapland
Traveling on a budget in Lapland can be pretty challenging but if you plan ahead and make smart choices it's absolutely possible!
Here’s a list of travel tips you’ll thank me for later👇🏾
✈️ Book your airplane tickets and accommodation in advance and plan activities ahead.
Remember that Finnish Lapland is not a last minute destination. You should definitely check out and book activities in advance to find discounts and avoid last-minute price deals. Many local hotels offer “early bird package deals” in summer and early autumn.
🎄Travel during off-peak months.
If you want to visit Lapland but don’t want to spend too much money please avoid traveling here on Christmas and New Year holidays. Also remember if you’re going to stay around the most popular ski resort like Levi, Ylläs and Ruka don’t pick ski holidays time (end of February-beginning of March). I would definitely recommend you to consider coming to Lapland in the end of November or in January when Polar night is over.
🚉 Use public transport.
If you’re traveling to Lapland alone or together with your partner and want to save some money I recommend you to use public transportation like trains and buses. Travel to Lapland by taking the original Santa Claus Express train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi.
If you’re staying around ski resorts then use ski buses. If you’re planning to stay in Rovaniemi check out public buses. You can even take a bus to Santa Claus village!
🦌 Find free and cheap activities.
Hiking to local national parks is absolutely free. Rent snowshoes and go exploring stunning Finnish nature. I would also recommend you to try cross country skiing while you’re in Lapland. We have so many nice cross country skiing trails all over Lapland.
Some hotels have a few reindeer close by like K5 Hotel in Levi. So you can always find an option how to save some money. More ideas about winter activities in Lapland you’ll find in my Lapland guide.
✨ Learn about the Northern Lights before coming to Lapland.
If you want to see the Northern Lights but don’t want to pay extra for Aurora tours please check this article about Aurora photography tips.
My Lapland guide includes the best photo spots in Levi, Rovaniemi, Kilpisjärvi, Ruka and many other places.
🔥 Use public wilderness huts and fireplaces to cook your own meals.
Wherever you go in Lapland, there is always a high chance to find a fireplace. Finns love outdoor cooking!
Grab a pack of local sausages and grill them by the fire. You can save plenty of money by cooking your own meals and travel like a local! If you’re renting a cabin then shop at local supermarkets (K-market, S-market, Prisma and the cheapest option is Lidl) and prepare your own food.
Enjoy your trip to Lapland and always have fun! 🙌🏾
