Park

Nachricht von Andrew Colacchio

One of the best times to visit Hampton Park is in the spring, when the azaleas explode into full bloom, covering the park in bright pink, purple, and red flowers. The fragrant rose garden and beautifully landscaped flower beds add even more color, making it a perfect place for photography, reading a book, or just taking in the scenery.

🏛️ A Park with a Storied Past

Hampton Park isn’t just beautiful—it’s packed with history.

  • In the 1800s, it was home to the Washington Race Course, one of the most famous horse tracks in the South.

  • After the Civil War, it became the site of one of the earliest Memorial Day celebrations, when freed African Americans honored Union soldiers buried on the grounds.

  • Later, it was transformed into Charleston’s version of a World’s Fair for the 1901-1902 South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition (which inspired the founding of the Charleston Museum).

  • Many of the large oak trees and lush gardens seen today date back to that exposition and were later expanded by the city into what is now Charleston’s most scenic public park.
