The fortifications of Loviisa are a significant part of the town's history and cultural heritage. Some of these fortifications are located on land (in the pictures), but one of the most famous parts of the fortress is the Svartholma Sea Fortress, which is situated near the mouth of Loviisa Bay. These fortifications are sister fortresses to Suomenlinna and belong to the same defense chain.

History: Construction began during Swedish rule in 1748 based on the plans of Colonel Augustin Ehrensvärd and was mostly completed during the 1750s. The fortifications originally served as Swedish defense fortifications but surrendered to the Russians almost without resistance in 1808. During the Crimean War in 1855, an English naval squadron rendered the island's fortifications unusable, and the fortress fell into disrepair. Since the 1960s, the fortress has been restored under the direction of the Finnish Heritage Agency.

Accessibility: The land fortress (free access) (in the pictures) is located at this point where the Rexby point is located. You can park your car in the parking lot. The sea fortress is accessible by ferry and you can hop in the ferry from the Laivasilta marine harbor. Ferry cost 12-22€

Loviisan linnoitukset ovat merkittävä osa kaupungin historiaa ja kulttuuriperintöä. Täällä maalla siis osa näistä linnoituksista, mutta yksi tunnetuimmista osista linnoituksista on Svartholman merilinnoitus, joka taas sijaitsee läheisellä Loviisanlahden suulla. Nämä linnoitukset on Suomenlinnan sisarlinnoitusta ja kuuluu samaan puolustusketjuun.

Historia: Rakennustyöt aloitettiin Ruotsin vallan aikaan vuonna 1748 eversti Augustin Ehrensvärdin suunnitelmien pohjalta, ja ne valmistuivat pääosin 1750-luvun aikana. Linnoitukset toimi alun perin Ruotsin puolustuslinnoituksena, mutta se antautui venäläisille lähes ilman vastarintaa vuonna 1808. Krimin sodan aikana vuonna 1855 englantilainen laivasto-osasto räjäytti saaren varustukset käyttökelvottomiksi, ja linnoitus jäi rappeutumaan. 1960-luvulta alkaen linnoitusta on restauroitu Museoviraston johdolla.
