The Gelmerbahn is the steepest open-air funicular train in Europe, bringing visitors up to the beautiful Gelmersee reservoir.

On social media, videos make this funicular look like a fast roller coaster. It actually moves quite slowly, but is still a fun and exciting ride.
It travels to a maximum incline of 106% It fits 24 people. The journey takes 12 mins, traveling 1028m and ascending 450m of elevation.

How to get there
In summer 2025, due to construction, there are limited parking spots. They recommend parking at the Meiringen Alpbach parking and arriving by bus.
By car: There is parking next to the funicular station (See on map). The closest address is Hotel Handeck, Grimselstrasse 19, 3864 Guttannen, which is just past the Gelmerbahn. About 50 min drive from Interlaken.
By public transport: The closest bus stop is Handegg, Gelmerbahn. The bus schedule is rather infrequent, so check schedule carefully on SBB.ch. About 1h30 from Interlaken.
