Here are some tips to keep you safe:

  • Know your limits: Choose hikes that match your fitness level and experience. Don’t attempt advanced trails if you're a beginner, and remember your life is worth more than an Instagram photo/video!

  • Stay informed: Check the weather forecast and trail conditions before heading out, or simply check the live webcams.

  • Hiking partner: Hike with a partner or let someone know your plans and expected return time. If it’s your first time hiking in Madeira and you don’t hike often at home, I recommend at least doing your first hike with an experienced mountain guide.

  • Follow trail markings: Stick to marked paths and follow any signs or guidelines you see. Don’t leave the trail and never climb over fences or boundaries.

  • Slippery trails: Be cautious near cliffs and steep edges, as trails can be slippery.

  • Leave no trace: Show respect for nature by not leaving any trash behind and taking your rubbish with you. Toilet paper also doesn’t decompose quickly, so please don’t leave it behind.

  • Emergency contacts: Save local emergency numbers, such as 112, in your phone and know how to call for help if needed.

  • Be prepared: Take enough water and snacks with you, even if you plan a short hike. The weather can change quickly.

  • Trust your instincts: If something doesn’t feel right or you have doubts about a situation, turn back or seek help.

By following these simple guidelines and being well-prepared, you can enjoy a safe and pleasant hiking experience on the beautiful island of Madeira.

With my interactive map, you'll always know which hikes are currently open or closed — no more unexpected surprises when arriving at a trail. You’ll also get access to:

  • Up-to-date trail conditions

  • Information on how and when to pay for certain hikes

  • Live weather details to help you plan safely

  • Practical info like parking spots, difficulty levels, and my personal tips for each route

Whether you're planning a long levada hike or a short walk to a viewpoint, this map will be your most helpful tool on the island.
