We finally did the iconic 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga—and it was every bit as unforgettable as people say. From the moment we left the city, winding through the High Atlas Mountains, to sleeping under the stars in the middle of the dunes, it was the kind of experience that sticks with you.
The journey kicks off with a scenic drive through the mountains, with picture-perfect views around every bend. Along the way, we stopped at Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s been used in countless movies. It’s one of those places where you can actually feel the history.
Day two brought even more surprises. We explored the dramatic Todra Gorges, then continued on to the edge of the Sahara. This is where the magic really began. Riding a camel into the dunes at sunset was surreal—like walking through a dream. We got to try sandboarding (highly recommend if you're up for a bit of fun), and then spent the night in a traditional Berber camp in Erg Chebbi. Sitting around the fire, listening to music, and watching the sky fill with stars was easily a top moment of the trip.
On the final morning, we woke up early for a sunrise camel ride—and wow. The light creeping over the dunes in total silence is something we’ll never forget. Then it was time for the long drive back to Marrakech, tired but totally filled up by the experience.
This tour is great for travelers of all ages, and most providers give you the option to choose between private or shared, as well as standard or luxury camps. If you're visiting Morocco and want to experience the Sahara the right way—this is it. Absolutely worth the 3 days.
