Behind the mud walls of an abandoned city in Uzbekistan lies a maze of narrow alleys with brightly colored mosaics that cover the many mosques. Khiva is a beautiful open-air museum in western Uzbekistan that makes you feel like you’ve just gone back in time. All things to do in Khiva are within the walkable old city walls and can be seen in one or two days.

Well, let us say that it did not disappoint our expectations! Khiva was all we expected and more. The city surprised and enchanted us. From carpet weaving workshops to beautiful minarets overlooking the ancient city, to ancient mosques and beautiful tiled towers, everything we saw was beautiful! It is true that the name Khiva was once synonymous with caravans of slaves and terrible cruelty. It used to be a slave trading station located between huge arid deserts. But today nothing remains of that brutal past. Khiva is now a tourist town that awaits tourists' buses instead of slave caravans. It is also a bit difficult to imagine that the city could have had such a barbaric past.

There is only one ticket that allows you to visit all the main attractions: all the historical sites, the museums, the city walls and the watchtower. Not only the entrance to the Pahlavon Mahmud Mausoleum (which you can buy separately for 25,000 som at the entrance of the mausoleum itself) and the climbing to the Islam Khoha minaret (which you can buy separately for 100,000 som at the minaret itself) are included.

The entrance ticket costs 150,000 som and is valid for 2 days. You can buy it at the ticket office (they accept cash or credit cards) just outside the West Gate of Khiva.

Khiva è un bellissimo museo all'aperto nell'Uzbekistan occidentale che ti fa sentire come se fossi appena tornato indietro nel tempo. Tutte le cose da fare a Khiva sono all'interno delle mura della città vecchia percorribili e possono essere viste in uno o due giorni.

Beh, lasciateci dire che non ha deluso le nostre aspettative! Khiva era tutto ciò che ci aspettavamo e altro ancora. La città ci ha sorpreso e incantato. Dai laboratori di tessitura dei tappeti agli splendidi minareti che si affacciano sulla città antica, alle antiche moschee e alle splendide torri ricoperte di piastrelle, tutto ciò che abbiamo visto era bellissimo! È vero che il nome Khiva un tempo era sinonimo di carovane di schiavi e di terribile crudeltà. Un tempo era una stazione di commercio di schiavi situata tra enormi deserti aridi. Tuttavia oggi non rimane più nulla di quel brutale passato. Khiva ora è una città turistica che attende gli autobus dei turisti invece delle carovane di schiavi. È anche un po' difficile immaginare che la città possa aver avuto un passato così barbaro.
